What is Interfaith/ Inner-Spiritual Art?
Perhaps it might be best to start with the exploration of the relationship between the meaning of religious art and
Interfaith/Inner-Spiritual art.
Religion has always been the human expression of something greater that lies within us. Humanity has struggled since our
first existence to understand what this is. We know it's there, but still such a mystery. The quest has been inspiring, and the
stories recorded in our holy books, and displayed in the elaborate architecture of our great temples, mosques, and cathedrals,
have served as inspiration to easel and instrument. Still, it is the expression of the human soul that draws the curves of color,
and fills the halls with rapturous sounds of inspired voice.
The creative process that comes out of the expression of this experience in itself is healing. What’s more beautiful is that the
one who experiences the expression is also transformed, often in profound ways.
What does religious art look like, when does it become Interfaith?
Depending on the religion or faith path one has chosen, it could look like a painting of a Buddha statue sitting silently in a
garden. It might look like a photograph of a Shaman saying a blessing over a sick woman.
While each of these examples represents ones interpretation of God through the tenets of a chosen religious path, it is when
we are able to display a collection of pieces derived from various religious paths that the label “Interfaith art” could be
applied.
An artistic interpretation of God through one’s own religious experience is powerful and has the potential of moving one up
the ladder of consciousness* indeed……but what if there was even more?
The more Interfaith art we experience, the more likely we will understand that there is a common theme that runs through all
religions. Beyond the beliefs and rituals of religion, we are all in search of the same thing, to feel safe and unconditionally
loved by the God we know, and constantly desire to understand.
From this place then, we transcend the limitations and barriers of religion, and begin to fill the gap of separation with
empathy and understanding for another.
What does the artwork look like from this perspective?
The artwork from this level might look like a traveling exhibit of seven huge chakra panels that permeate beams of colored
light onto its viewers leaving them in a state of bliss, or perhaps it’s a piece of music that, when finished, there isn’t a dry
eye in the house, simply because everyone present has been touched in the same place and very well, in the same way. Art
has the incredible gift of touching us deeply in an individual way, at the same time bonding as a group, as kin, as part of
something greater.
Ultimately, because there are so many human beings at so many varying levels of consciousness the need for spiritual
artwork that is expressed from these levels is also needed in order to help move even the lowest of levels up the scale of
awareness. As Interfaith/Inner-Spiritual artists, this is the service we can humbly offer humanity.
Interfaith/Inner-Spiritual Art:
The creative expression of an
individual’s “God” experience,
often transcending a concrete
religious expression. And through
viewing or experiencing this
creative expression, it has the
potential of moving one to a greater
understanding of self and others
and thus, a higher level of
consciousness.
*Scale of Consciousness – briefly, each
level of consciousness (LOC) coincides
with determinable human behaviors and
perceptions about life and God. Each level
represents a corresponding attractor field of
varying strength that exists beyond our
three-dimensional reality. More
